Korea // 01

Our first week in South Korea has been everything we could have hoped for!

The adventure started out a little rocky...I got motion sick on the plane, and then they lost my luggage. Nothing felt more defeating than walking out of the Incheon International Airport with a yellow piece of paper instead of all of my clothing. But it all worked out, I had extra clothing in my carry on (I have always been given and repeated the advice that you should have a few days worth of clothing in your carry on, in case of situations just like this), and they had my luggage back to me within 48 hours! Hooray! It was stressful, and we didn't take any pictures for the first few days because we just weren't in a documenting sort of mood, but in the end prayers were answered and I can get dressed!

Although the beginning was rough, we were immediately surrounded with the warmth (literally and figuratively) of our new home. We live in Cheongna, which we have found is actually as rural as it can get here. And we LOVE that. After taking the subway into Seoul three times this week we have found that our hearts really are more satisfied with greenery and mountains and all things rural. There are farming fields surrounding the area, but everyone lives in skyscrapers. It's this incredible mix of big city/small town. Just our tempo. We got lucky.

We started work on Monday at YBM Playschool and oh boy, we are loving it. We will say this much, it is something else demanding the attention of children who really can't help how restless they are. However, we have both found that just in the first week it's been rewarding.

Our apartment is a studio apartment, and we have felt pretty blessed to be able to have a washing machine, an American style shower, and this space to ourselves. Apparently it's a big deal that we have a fridge and freezer too, I mean that's what people at church said...so go us!

This week we have mainly been setting up house in our spare time. We ventured into Seoul last Sunday to go to church, and that is a story for a separate post, but we did find the church building and then got invited to dinner by some of the branch members. It was great making new friends and just hearing about what we can expect here in Korea!

We've done a lot of grocery shopping to stock our cabinets, seeing as we're buy-in-bulk-and-then-slowly-eat-it-all type of people, and we've rearranged the furniture in our little apartment so it better suits our needs (Korean bed frames are harder to move than you would think). And then we had the 4th of July to celebrate. I wish we could tell you we had did something crazy for the 4th, but we just made mashed potatoes, grilled chicken, and had some watermelon together-oh and we ate that on the roof of our skyscraper. I thought it was just right. Happy birthday 'murica.

Anyways, enough of me rambling, let's see if I can show you what's really going on here. Enjoy!

The roof of our apartment building, which is 14 stories. Those other skyscrapers are about 40 stories tall, so ours is just a little guy!

Eating our watermelon! Happy 4th of July!

Seoul Temple, English sessions are the first Saturday of every month!

I waited forever for this shot...
